KUTTNER SIEBERT Galerie presents its second individual exhibition of work by New York artist Terry Haggerty. Haggerty’s painting lives from the dense mixture of simultaneous affirmation and distance. Its optical composition is extremely precise and cool, evoking the impression of an almost mechanical perfection, for each painterly gesture is cloaked behind several layers of varnish. In addition, there is the simple planimetric structure of lines running parallel over long stretches, then abruptly curving, thus suggesting plasticity. If at first at issue is the beholder’s unbelieving astonishment before this painterly precision, what slowly develops is a visual impact that the viewer can no longer resist. In his new works, a dynamic develops across the entire image surface that causes a quite rapid change in the perception of forms. The perceptual capacity of the beholder is called upon to separate minute moments of various possibility of perception. But this calculated transgression of impact is not static, so that the selective-subjective accounting for the images is drawn into doubt in the same moment and its renewed examination is forced.
Terry Haggerty’s exhibition at the Hammer Museum Los Angeles was on view recently.
