'Fragments of Another Language' is a series of photographs of basic
road maintenance materials that have been assembled and rearranged
around Alexanderplatz in Berlin by a group of skateboarders for
their own use. Their new function is a little unclear but the sense
of improvisation and of use and reuse is strong repeating motif
in the photographs. There are continually new arrangements of the
same basic elements again and again. Because of the way they are
used each element or series of elements has enough space around
it to present it in isolation, contributing to the impression that
the pieces exist autonomously. This is echoed in the strategies
for displaying much modern sculpture and allows us to interpret
these objects on many different levels.
