The exhibition "Die gute Stube" ["The Parlor"]
combines four artistic positions from the realms of sculpture,
installation, and site-specific objects. The exhibition, initiated
by Wolfgang Stehle, shows works by Florian Balze, Eva Berendes,
and Martin Wöhrl, along with Stehle's own work.
The works of the four artists occasionally move into the realm
between self-referential and functional objects. For example, the
Berlin artist Eva Berendes presents a screen that in terms of its
formal language is reminiscent of Russian constructivism. The screen's
sculptural presence divides the space around it, while still maintaining
a decidedly pictorial character.
Florian Balze uses in his work standard materials from the world
of indoor decoration: plaster, wood, wall paint, and tiles. Here
there are two overlapping patterns: wooden components with circular
holes cut out that are grouped loosely before a second layer with
orthogonally structured fabric-covered board. Balze explores the
marginal realms of art, not only in his choice of material and
form. The visible result itself lives from the dialectic of such
references and the directness and presence of the work.
The materials used by Martin Wöhrl are also very familiar
to us from the world of DIY and hardware stores. In the exhibition,
he presents two floor lamps, staples of the proper parlor that
lose their domestic charm on closer inspection in their use of
cheap materials. Beside an expansive sculpture that illustrates
the intersection of interior and exterior, Wolfgang Stehle shows
a wall work reminiscent of a stylized hunting trophy; this work,
particularly when combined with the title of the exhibition, treats
the question of the autonomy of art and its problematic relationship
to the world of décor.
