ANJA SCHWÖRER

1971 born in Kandel, Germany
1997–2003 Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Karlsruhe

lives and works in Berlin

In Anja Schwörer’s pictures, the confrontation between various creative means leads to a broad surface structure of patterns, colours and dark/light contrasts. By colouring and discolouring the canvas, and with the interplay between formal construction and deconstruction, Anja Schwörer creates abstract worlds of unusual intensity. When a dark grid of pointed, angular elements stretches in contrast over a light, shimmering background, or bright lines radiate towards a point on a dark base, intensifying into a focus of light, her crystalline structures remind the viewer of both dynamic futurism and the language of architectural expressionism. When looking at such details, the creative power of light in Anja Schwörer’s pictures becomes evident: like an archaic representation of the sun, the concentration of lines radiates into a point of escape; in other pictures, by using bleach-treated canvas, the artist surrounds geometric shapes with an intangible aura.
